MCPHERSON — Ellinwood's Luke Heinz battled for a top 20 medal with a 163 total (78-85) to tie for 18th place at the 2A state golf championship at Turkey Creek Golf Course Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Heinz birdied No. 17 and No. 18 to finish his first nine holes. Heinz birdied No. 9 to finish his round to tie for 11th place after 18 holes.

The Eagles finished eighth (376) by also counting scores by 62nd-place Austin Brack (96); 64th Braden Lewis, 98 with a birdie at No. 11; and 70th Keaton Lewis (104).

Reigning 2A state champion Salina Sacred Heart (611, 311-300) captured its 10th consecutive 2A state championship by overcoming a 10-shot deficit. Hoxie's Noah Dowell shot even-par 140 (68-2) to edge Oakley's Easton Fink 142 (72-70) by two strokes.

Syracuse placed runner-up at 628 (301-327) after trailing Sacred Heart by 27 strokes Wednesday.

EMPORIA — Great Bend's golf team finished 12th (357) in Tuesday's opening round of the 5A state golf championship at Emporia Golf Course. 

Ethan Somers (81) placed 57th to nearly qualify for the second round. Also counting were 82nd-place Nash Lindberg (88); 86th Alec Premer (89) and 88th Eli Somers (95). The Panthers (375) earned a surprising 5A state berth May 19 at Wichita’s Auburn Hills Golf Course.

Lenexa St. James 552 (276-276) rolled to a dominating 29-stroke victory over Goddard Eisenhower (581). Andover Central's Colt Farrow scorched Emporia for a 7-under-par 64 to finish at 11-under-par 131, three shots ahead of St. James' Josh Fratzel (134).

GARDEN CITY — Hoisington’s Logan Cossel barely missed a top 20 medal and finished in 24th place after back-to-back 82s for a 164 score at the 3A state golf championship at Garden City’s Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.

The Cardinals (366) finished 10th (366) Tuesday. Others counting for the Cardinals were 65th Nolan Jacobs (92), 71st Karson Kinman (94) and 82nd Kobe Crawford (98) and Peyton Kinman (98).

Wichita Collegiate 644 (315-329) edged rival Wichita Trinity 649 (316-333) by five strokes for the 3A state title. Hesston's Grant Waterson 147 (71-76) edged Council Groves Drew Buchman (149) and Humboldt's Connor Newman by two strokes (149) to win the individual state title.

DODGE CITY — St. John (403) finished 12th at the 1A state golf championship Tuesday at Dodge City’s Mariah Hills Golf Course.

St. John's Weston Peterson 180 (89-91) placed 30th. Also counting for the Tigers were 53rd place Brody Vieux (98); 64th Easton Alpers (105) and 78th Dylan Vieux (111).

Hutchinson Central Christian (633, 318-315) beat South Gray (650) by 17 strokes for the 1A team championship. South Gray's Gavin Wahl (136) shot 6-under-par to capture the 1A state title.
