St. John captures CPL lead

ST. JOHN — Old-style basketball still works. St. John’s 6-foot-7 Tanner Halling dominated inside with 30 points and 12 rebounds to spark the Tigers past LaCrosse 49-42 in a battle for first place in the Central Prairie League. Eli Delp contributed 11 rebounds and six points for St. John (14-3, 6-0 CPL). The Tigers dominated the boards 38-15.

LaCrosse (13-4, 5-1) ouscored the Tigers 27-0 from 3-point range on 9 of 20 shooting, but St. John outscored the Leopards 19-5 on free throws and 30-10 on 2-pointers. Blake Pierce led the Leopards with 13 points and Blake Herrman added 12 points.

CENTRAL PLAINS 89, MEADE 21

MEADE — It's 128 and counting. 

All-stater Emily Ryan contributed 29 points and led the Oilers with 13 steals, nine assists and six rebounds in a dominating 89-21 non-league basketball victory over Meade. Ryan has broken Sublette's Shalee Lehning's state record for career steals. The Oilers (17-0) have earned a state record 128 consecutive victories, fifth all-time in U.S. girls basketball history. 

Addison Crites and Kassidy Nixon each scored 13 points and Delaney Rugan and Hammeke each contributed 10 points. Rachel Lamatsch contributed six steals. The Oilers led 59-5 at halftime.

MACKSVILLE 63, KINSLEY 40

MACKSVILLE — Macksville's Rogelio Ibarra and Alexis Barton each scored 15 points as the Mustangs rolled past Kinsley 63-40 in Tuesday's Central Prairie League basketball game. 

Ryan Kuckelman contributed a career high 21 rebounds and 12 points for the Mustangs (7-9, 3-2 CPL). Rogelio Ibarra had seven steals and Harley Blaske dished out four assists. The Mustangs converted 6 of 26 3-pointers.

"We played good defense and forced several turnovers," said Macksville coach Jeff Kuckelman. "Our offensive execution was pretty good at times. We need to work on making that more consistent."
