LINDSBORG – Hoisington's Drew Nicholson capped off an 8-point spurt with a slam dunk off a steal to ignite a 25-point second half and a 47-30 lead. Nicholson tied his career high 32 points for a 71-50 Central Kansas League basketball victory over Smoky Valley.

Nicholson keyed the Cardinals' 2-2-1 press with Ryan Woydziak to outscore the Vikings 19-12 in the third quarter. The Cardinals scored 16 off 19 Smoky Valley turnovers. Nicholson scored 12 points as the Vikings' zone defense let him launch 3-pointers. Mason Haxton scored 10 points and Bralen Thompson chipped in six points.

"Our 1-2-2 press gave them fits that third quarter," said Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton. "Ryan Woydziak was a game-changer. He plays so tough and hard. Everyone played well except for one stretch."

LINDSBORG – Smoky Valley erased a 6-point deficit with a 21-5 scoring burst for a 49-37 victory over Hoisington's girls in Thursday's Central Kansas League basketball game.

Hoisington (6-11, 2-5) played a solid first half for a 22-18 lead. But the Vikings' defense sped up the Cardinals, who were outscored 18-4 in the third period to trail 36-26.

Macy Hanzlick scored 16 points and Keeley Wolf added eight points. Smoky Valley (11-7, 3-4) was paced by McKinley Johnson (12) and Adrian Hazelwood (10). The Vikings converted 7 of 10 field goals in the third quarter.

"We played well that first half. I was proud we fought," said Hoisington coach Mandy Mason. "But you can't play a half of basketball and expect to win ballgames. We got away from our offense."

Mason was disappointed the Cardinals were outplayed after halftime.

"They wanted to win more than we did," she said. "They played more aggressive with their defense. They got to loose balls and hit 3-pointers."
