ELLINWOOD — Parker Scheck sparked Ellinwood's defense with five steals and eight rebounds that kept pesky Spearville from an upset bid with a 48-30 2A substate basketball victory. Britton Dutton scored 15 points and Scheck added 14 points, including sparkling inside defense. Koy Behnke contributed six assists. The Eagles converted 18 of 50 field goals with a trio of 3-pointers.

Ellinwood led 29-24 when Dutton, Gage Hosman, Scheck and Koy Behnke's steal fed Dutton for a game-clinching 37-24 lead. 

Spearville's Kolten Bennett scored nine points.

HOLCOMB GIRLS 37, HOISINGTON 32

HOISINGTON — Hoisington's defense was good enough holding Holcomb to 20 percent shooting in a hard-fought 37-32 basketball loss in Monday's 3A Larned basketball substate. But there was no defense for Holcomb 17 free throws, including the game's final seven points.

Hoisington's Brielle Romeiser converted the biggest field goal of her life, a remarkable putback for a 32-30 lead. But the Cardinals never scored again. Holcomb's McKee Blackburn hit four free throws. Emma Cornelson converted a trio of free throws, including the tying and go-ahead free throws.

The Cardinals scored on two of their final 16 possessions in the final quarter. Holcomb's Rian Rodriguez hauled down the game's biggest play, an offensive rebound that led to Jera Kruleski's tying 3-pointer for a 30-30 tie. Nicole Ruda's offensive rebound allowed Cornelsen to convert the tying and winning free throws for a 33-32 lead.

The Cardinals (8-13) were poised for their first postseason victory since 2013 when they beat Phillipsburg. But the Cardinals lost their offensive rhythm after leading 19-5 with five minutes left in the first half. Holcomb's Ryleigh McVey converted a 3-pointer to cap a 13-3 surge to end the first half.

Macy Hanzlick led the Cardinals with 11 points and Addy Mason and Samatha Colson added six apiece. Holcomb's Ruda scored 10 points and Kruleski nine points.

HUGOTON –  The Hugoton Lady Eagles lived up to their No. 1 seeding Monday as they dominated the eighth-seeded Larned Lady Indians 64-12.

Hugoton (20-1) advances to Thursday’s 3A semifinal against  Holcomb (7-14). Hugoton converted 25 of 57 field goals and 9 of 12 free throws. Mikyn Hamlin (18), Gianna Vos (14) and Summya Adigun (10) scored in double figures.

Larned (2-19) converted 5 of 28 field goals for 17% and committed 36 turnovers. Julie Tapia scored five points and Elizabeth Herrera hit a 3-pointer.

Hugoton used a 19-4 first-quarter spurt. Keyed by 11 first-quarter Larned turnovers, Hugoton hit on all cylinders from inside and outside. Larned scored  two second quarter points as the Eagles led 37-6 at halftime. Mikyn Hamlin and Vos combined for 25 first-half points.

Turnovers against Hugoton's full-court pressure limited Larned's shot attempts as the Indians made 3 of 13 shots. Hugoton made 5 three-point baskets.

Hugoton used a 17-2 third quarter run for a 54-8 lead. The final ended 64-12 with reserves playing much of the fourth quarter.
