LINDSBORG – The Barton Community College Wrestling team competed this past Saturday at the fifth-annual Swede Open held in Lindsborg.  Facing a field of NAIA and NCAA Division II ranked wrestlers, the Cougars came through with a 16-28 overall individual record and one fourth-place finish. 

 Great Bend freshman Kade Sander was the lone placer finishing fourth in the 157 pound weight division. Getting an opening 12-2 major decision over Bacone College’s Courtney Shavers in the first round, Sander reached the semifinals with a come-from-behind effort over Alex Destra of Missouri Valley College.  

Trailing 8-1 Sander shutout Destra the rest of the way winning 10-8 to advance to meet up with the top ranked NAIA wrestler Zach Skates of Oklahoma City University. After being tied at four, Skates went on to win 17-8 bouncing Sander to the consolation side of the bracket.   

In a rematch of their first round matchup, Sander again defeated Shavers with a 16-1 technical fall before dropping an 11-4 major decision to Bradley Little of Fort Hays State University.
