LIBERAL – Liberal’s Kyle Schmidt hit a pair of homers to spark the Bee Jays past the Great Bend Bat Cats 10-4 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the Jayhawk Conference baseball series. Schmidt hit a two-run sixth-inning homer off Alex Ruxlow and a two-run seventh-inning homer off Austin Pritchard. Pitcher Jake Harrison (3-0) threw six innings.
Liberal (10-3) won its seventh consecutive game while the Bat Cats (5-9) dropped its fourth game in a row. The Derby Twins (9-4) travel to Great Bend for a three-game series starting Tuesday. The Bats Cats are 3-2 at Al Burns Field.
Maize’s Corrigan Bartlett, who played for Barton Community College delivered a three-run double to score Brennan Fontenot, Mateo Zunica and Michael Sinks in a three-run sixth inning. Harrison preserved a 4-3 lead by retiring two of the Bat Cats’ best hitters Dawson Pomeroy and Jordan Wilkerson.
Zunica walked and Bartlett singled and Zunica scored on an eighth-inning passed ball.
