Bat Cats help West win Sunflower All-Star showdown

WICHITA – With powerhouses Cheney and Hutchinson joining the Great Bend Bat Cats, the West squad slugged past the East All-Stars 13-4 in Monday’s Sunflower Collegiate League.

Great Bend Bat Cat pitchers Gyeongju Kim and Zach Thornton each threw one shutout innings. Jake Kuntzendorf yielded tree unearned runs in the fifth inning.

Bat Cat catcher Jett Forrest singled in two at-bats. Alex Rodgers grounded out twice.

The West exploded for four sixth-inning runs and six more runs in the decisive seventh inning.

In the sixth, Cheney’s Jordan Stubbings singled home Hutchinson’s Garrett Anglim and Hutchinson’s Breck Nowik singled in Andale’s Matt Goertzman. Andale’s Collin Young doubled home Stubbins and Nowik for a 6-3 lead.

In the seventh, Anglim and Stubbings hit RBI groundouts. Nowik and Andale’s Jacob Woods hit back-to-back RBI singles. Collin Young and Hutchinson’s Cooper Harris ripped back-to-back RBI triples for a 12-3 lead. Cheney’s Isaac Williams scored the 13th run on Goertzman’s groundout.

Hutchinson’s Tanner White and Andale’s Gavin Rogers homered for a 2-0 lead after 41/2 innings.

Newton’s Nolan Riley singled home teammate Andrew Brautman in the fifth inning and Derby’s Chuck Ingram tripled home Slugger Connor Flagg and Riley for a 3-2 lead.

Trailing 13-3, Sunflower Seed Roger Viloria drove home teammate Austin Bonnell with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly.

Thornton (2.41, 1-1),  Kuntzendorf (3.05, 3-1), Kim (2.89, 1-2), catcher Forrest (.279) and centerfielder Rodgers (.328) earned their way in the July 5 Sunflower Collegiate League All-Star Game at Wichita State's Eck Stadium.
