Cardinal baseball surprises Hesston, splits twin bill

HESSTON – Hoisington reliever Lane French preserved an 8-8 tie and the Cardinals surprised Hesston with a 7-run eighth inning for a 15-9 Central Kansas League baseball victory. Hoisington (3-5, 3-5 CKL) handed Hesston (9-1, 7-1 CKL) its first loss of the season.

Hesston rallied for a 6-5 victory in an 8-inning nightcap.

CARDINALS 15, HESSTON 9 (G1) – French stranded the game-winning runner on base by retiring Kaden Cox and Blayne Wilson to preserve an 8-8 tie after the Swathers scored three runs.

Hoisington’s Chase Steinert, M.J. Aylward, Gratton Dalton and Tony Moore delivered RBI hits in a 7-run eighth inning. French, Aylward and Carson Mason scored on errors.

Moore, Steinert, Aylward, Dalton and Ethan Graff also drove home two runs.

Hesston’s Gunnar Lewis drove home three runs and Keagan Shelite hit a 3-run homer.

HESSTON 6, CARDINALS 5 (G2) – Hoisington was three outs away from a historic doubleheader sweep when Hesston swung the momentum with a 3-run seventh inning. Whit Rhodes singled home Blayne Wilson with the game-winner. Jacob Burkholder scored on a groundout. Shelite singled home Brett Cox. Shelite scored on an error for a 5-5 tie.

The Cardinals took advantage of six Hesston errors to score four unearned runs. Steinert scored on Marcus Ingram’s single. Moore scored on Steinert’s single. Moore tripled home Leyton Haxton for a 3-1 lead.
