HOISINGTON – Hoisington’s girls jumped out to a 15-7 first-quarter lead and downed Larned 48-37 in Tuesday's Central Kansas League basketball game.
Hoisington (12-6, 3-4 CKL) dominated the rebounding which led to a number of second-chance baskets. Ellie Crawford scored 14 points and Kylee Hahn added 12 points. Mallory Mooney added eight points. The Cardinals converted 5 of 18 3-pointers to outscore the Indians 15-0. The Cardinals converted 13 of 20 free throws.
'It was a good night of basketball. We enjoyed a great defensive game. Defense is what gets it done," said Hoisington coach Trina Lutters. "We stayed aggressive when things didn't go our way offensively. We ran the floor well. Our transition game was really good. That's been a goal."
Larned (7-11, 2-5 CKL) was scoreless from beyond the three-point line, going 0 for 11. The Indians made 14 of 45 field goals (31%) and 9 of 12 free throws. Akielah Collins scored a career high 21 points. Jadyn Crosby added eight points.
“I was disappointed with the lack of energy we started the game with," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "We were slow. We had way too many turnovers and we weren’t guarding. We let Hoisington take advantage. We were never able to make up, though we did cut it "
Crawford scored 12 and Collins nine as Hoisington extended their lead to 31-17 keyed by 12 Larned turnovers. Larned narrowed the gap to 38-30 after three quarters. The Cardinals sealed the victory with free throws.
