Cardinal girls sweep Ellsworth track title

The Hoisington Cardinal girls captured the team title at Tuesday's Ellsworth Track Invitational. The Cardinals won first place at Russell last week.

ELLSWORTH — Two-time state qualifier Samantha Colson won the 100-meter hurdles (15.69) and helped the 400-meter relay to first place at Tuesday's Ellsworth Track Invitational. Colson teamed with Sheena Gocela, Macy Hanzlick and Suzanna Schneider to win the 400-meter relay ((51.23).

Other Cardinal first-place winners were Schneider, javelin (106-6) and Shellamae Farmer, pole vault (9-0). Finishing runner-up were Colson, 100 meters (13.12) and long jump (15-4) and Kylee Hahn, 100 hurdles (17.34) and 300 hurdles (53.02).

Hoisington's girls scored 132.5 points to finish first ahead of Southeast of Saline (84.5) in 55-degree weather accompanied by 10-15 mph north winds. 

"We put up some outstanding times in some of our races on the girls side," said Hoisington coach Dan Schmidt.

Central Plains Oiler Brynna Hammeke won the high jump (5-2). The Oilers quartet of Jennah Jeffrey, Monica Short, Kyla Metro and Callie Zink finished runner-up in the 3,200-meter relay (11:12.4).

BOYS DIVISION — Southeast of Saline (162) captured the boys division followed by WaKeeney Trego (70) and Hoisington (59).

The Hoisington Cardinals placed runner-up in the pole vault, Josiah Ball (11-6) and the 400-meter relay (45.21) with Cade Mason, Shive, Dylan Richards and Chase Robinson competing. The Cardinals placed third in the 1,600 relay (3:42.79) and 3,200 relay (9:10.04).

Central Plains Oiler Cole Lamatsch placed runner-up in the 3,200 meters (10:47.86). Michael Laymon (5-8) finished runner-up in the high jump.
