The Hoisington Cardinals capture the regional wrestling title at Colby. Six Cardinals qualify for the 4-1A state tournament at Salina.

COLBY – Just like coach Dan Schmidt predicted, the Hoisington Cardinal girls captured the 4-1A Colby regional title and qualified six wrestlers for the 4-1A state tournament Feb. 23-24 at Salina. The Cardinals (109) beat Lakin (66) for the team title.

Hoisington champion Sheena Gocela (101) joins runner-up Daijah Jones (132), runner-up Tally Wikum (138), third-place Emily Lovett (126) and fourth place Kiana Grandclair (120) and fourth place Lyrica Orosco (155).

No. 3 ranked Gocela (21-4) downed Cimarron’s Veronica Greene, 18-5 in the championship match. Jones (17-11) was pinned by Russell’s No. 4 ranked Jaden Ney (1:48).

The night’s feature match showcased Hoxie’s No. 1 ranked Marissa Posch defeating No. 2 ranked Wikum 9-4 in the finals. The two will be favored to meet again in two weeks.

No. 5 ranked Lovett (27-7) pinned Norton’s Kaitlyn Tallent (0:54) for third place. Grandclair(18-12) and Orosco (16-8) both lost third-place matches and will be paired against regional champions at the state meet.
