HALSTEAD – Pesky Halstead pitcher Kaci Young struck out Kassidy Nixon to end the Dragons’ 6-5 upset over Central Kansas League leader Hoisington/Central Plains in Friday’s softball doubleheader. Hoisington (11-1 CKL) dominated the opener 15-1 over Halstead (8-3 CKL).
HALSTEAD 6, CARDINALS 5 (G2) – Hoisington contributed to the setback with three errors, four walks, a hit batter and a passed ball that led to three unearned Halstead runs. Rylee Carmichael delivered the Dragons’ first RBI single that scored Abby Church. Mya Morris singled home Payton Divine for the Dragons’ second RBI for a 6-0 lead.
Hoisington’s Kadence Urban and Nixon scored on errors in a 3-run sixth inning. Jordyn Boxberger scored on Mollie Steiner’s single. Urban’s 2-run homer scored Gracie Aylward In the seventh inning for a 6-5 final.
CARDINALS 15, HALSTEAD 1 (G1) – Hoisington’s Nixon spun a one-hitter with six strikeouts.
Nixon drove home three runs with a sacrifice fly that scored Shaylah Kempke and a 2-run triple that scored Kempke and Kadence Urban. Kashlin Beck ripped a 2-run homer. Jordyn Boxberger and Ava Henry each drove in two runs. Urban and Ogle drove in a run.
