Cardinals split opening twin bill

LYONS – The Lyons Lions rallied for a Central Kansas League softball split with a 7-6 victory after the Hoisington Cardinals dominated Tuesday’s softball opener 14-5.

Lyons Lion Geraldine Vargas singled home Dylann Procopio with the game-winning seventh-inning run in the nightcap.

HOISINGTON 14, LYONS 5 (G1) – Hoisington’s Kadence Urban drove home five runs with two doubles and a triple and pitched four innings to earn the first-game victory. Keeley Wolf scored four runs.

Urban singled home Gracie Aylward, Wolf scored on a steal and Urban scored on an error in a three-run third inning. Wolf scored on a steal and Ava Henry singled home Urban for a 5-4 lead.

The Cardinals scored six fourth-inning runs. Mollie Steiner scored on Addison Smith’s groundout. Addyson Ogle stole home. Aylward and Wolf scored on Urban’s triple. Kortney Lang singled home Urban, Henry scored on a steal.

Urban’s fifth-inning double scored Smith and Aylward in a three-run fifth inning. Wolf scored on Henry’s groundout for a 14-5 lead.

LYONS 7, HOISINGTON 6 (G2) – Lyons rallied from a 6-4 deficit for a 6-6 tie. Lizbeth Valenzuela scored on Kayleigh Arriola’s sixth-inning single. Yaretzy Pina scored on a bases-loaded walk for a 6-6 tie.

Cardinal Kempke scored on Lang’s second-inning groundout. Urban scored on a wild pitch and Lang’s single scored Kempke for a 3-3 tie. Aylward scored on a fifth-inning error for a 4-3 lead.

Jordyn Boxberger scored a sixth-inning run and Steiner scored on Aylward’s groundout for a 6-4 lead after 51/2 innings.
