LARNED – Defending Keady Classic girls champion Spearville was cruising leading underdog Hoisington 45-23 after three quarters. Most Valuable Player Alissa Heskamp had no problem with Hoisington High’s defense.
Spearville survived Hoisington’s brilliant comeback effort 53-50 after the Cardinals rallied from a 22-point deficit with a 27-8 fourth quarter.
The momentum swung the Cardinals’ way when tempers flared on offsetting technical fouls on Hoisington’s Samantha Colson and Spearville’s Heskamp, who drew her fifth foul.
Spearville slowly lost composure down the stretch after the technicals. Hoisington erupted for 12 straight points to close within 12 points with 4:22 left in the contest. Macy Hanzlick and Suzanna Schneider started the fourth quarter rally.
The hot hand of Addy Mason would power the Cardinals, and all the energy was with the Cardinals. Spearville led 50-43, a far cry from the 45-23 lead the Lancers had at the beginning of the quarter.
“We were finally able to get some momentum. We were hitting shots from the outside, and at that point everything was clicking,” said Hoisington coach Mandy Mason commented.
Spearville played not to lose and nearly lost by trying to stall the final minutes without their best player. The Royal Lancers led 52-44, but the Lancers started to resemble a sinking ship.
Hoisington was down five with a little over a minute to go when buckets from Keely Wolf and Suzanna Schneider would bring the Cardinals within 52-50.
Spearville’s Kaley Pedigo hit a free throw. The Cardinals would have the ball with 14.9 seconds left, with a 3-point shot to force overtime. Macy Hanzlick’s 3-pointer missed and Kaley Pedigo would get the defensive rebound to seal the deal for the Lancers.
Mason was proud of her team.
“We’re still learning,” she said. “We’re a new team. We’ve added Macy Hanzlick into the mix. We aren’t quite gelling yet. We’re doing a better job of playing with each other and for each other, and that’s going to be beneficial for us down the stretch.”
Spearville forced multiple turnovers to fluster the Hoisington offense. Hoisington scored their points via three pointers from Samantha Colson and Addy Mason and a bucket from Livvy Brewer.
Spearville finished the half with a 11-4 run for a 28-16 lead. Heskamp broke the Keady Classic record in the Larned semifinal game and broke the tournament record with 86 points over the tournament. Haviland’s Audra Binford previously held the record with 79 points.
Spearville started the second half with a 11-0 run with two buckets from Nau and seven points from Heskamp. Hoisington’s Steele Brack scored to break the streak.

LARNED – Bucklin’s Catherine Bowman single handedly outscored the Larned Indians with 29 points to power the Red Aces to a 47-24 third-place victory at the Keady Basketball Classic.
A relatively close first half was blown away by a big third quarter for Bucklin as they outscored Larned 13-3 to grab a 34-18 third quarter lead. The first quarter ended 13-8 and the halftime edge was 21-15 as Larned hung close. Larned would score only 9 second half points enabling Bucklin to coast to the victory.
“We had a poor third quarter and couldn’t keep up,” said Larned coach Ashley Crosby. “Bowman is a good player and we let her get inside too easy. We didn’t handle their full-court pressure well with our 23 turnovers.”
Bucklin’s Bowman exhibited her basketball skills from the outside and the inside. She made a number of nifty inside moves and drained three pointers as she was the big difference in the game. Bucklin’s Halie Feikert was strong with rebounding and her inside scoring. .
Bucklin was 17 of 43 from the field and 8 of 13 from the charity stripe. Bowman led the scoring parade with her 29 while Feikert with 11 and Emalea Warden’s 5 provided backup.
Larned’s 23 turnovers hampered the offense. Julie Tapia scored 6 to lead Larned. She received support from Kiana Meyer with 7 and Cadee Upson’s 6 as the Lady Indians claimed fourth place in the tournament.
