HAVEN — Hoisington's volleyball team finished runner-up with a 4-2 record at the Central Kansas League volleyball tournament. It's the highest finish by the Cardinals in the CKL Tournament.
Halstead downed the Cardinals 25-22, 26-24 in the championship match. Hoisington upset Smoky Valley 25-21, 12-25, 25-22 and Halstead ended the 40-match winning streak of 2A state champion Hillsboro 25-18, 25-23 in the semifinals.
Hoisington's splendid play was sparked by Jordyn Boxberger, Mallory Mooney, Kylee Hahn, Sofia Simic, Gabby Reif and Ellie Crawford. In other matches, Hillsboro defeated Hoisington, 18-25, 25-15, 25-19 and Hoisington defeated Lyons, 25-14, 25-22; Pratt, 16-25, 25-11, 25-16; and Haven, 25-11, 25-10 to reach the semifinals.
"The girls enjoyed a good weekend," said Hoisington coach Mykela Riedl. "We played high-level volleyball at times, but struggled with nerves and lack of consistency. They started to settle in and came through when they needed to. The CKL is tough. All four semifinal teams are solid. You fight for every point. I’m proud of how the girls continued to fight even when our offense or defense wasn’t working like we wanted. We have work to do, but it should be a good year for Lady Cardinal volleyball."
Gabby Reif (72) and Jordyn Boxberger (50) led the Cardinals in digs. Sofia Simic delivered 44 digs and 70 winners at 29% hitting. Boxberger hit 42 winners. Kylee Hahn had 30 winners at 21% hitting. led our team’s hitting percentage. Ellie Crawford supplied 116 assists.
Larned's hard luck continued in the CKL Tournament with a 0-5 record.
