Central Plains boys roar into 1A state tournament

CENTRAL PLAINS BOYS 54, WALLACE COUNTY 31

WAKEENEY – Oiler fans who traveled 95 miles to WaKeeney were rewarded with a second substate basketball championship.

The Central Plains boys overpowered Sharon Springs Wallace County 54-31 in Saturday’s 1A WaKeeney basketball substate. The No. 1 ranked Oilers (24-0) will join their girls team at the 1A state tournament at Dodge City. The Oilers have won 50 consecutive games after winning the 2A state championship.

Oiler Brett Liebl scored 21 points and Alex Hickel added 18 points as the tandem dominated inside.

Wallace County’s Trever Medina scored 14 points. Wallace County led 9-2 in the first few minutes.

WAKEENEY – Central Plains Oiler Brett Liebl scored 24 points and Myles Menges added 19 points and 12 rebounds as the No. 1 ranked Oilers cruised past Stockton 73-25 in the 1A Wakeeney basketball substate.

The Oilers (23-0) have swept 49 consecutive games after winning the 2A state title last year. Central Plains led 21-0 after one period and 36-9 at halftime.
