HESSTON —Central Plains doubles Brett Liebl and Devin Ryan captured the Hesston 3-1A tennis regional Friday to help the Oilers in the regional with 14 points.
The No. 1 seeded Liebl and Ryan (23-0) downed Smoky Valley’s Matt Lucas-Jake Lucas 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in the championship match. Liebl and Ryan maintain a remarkable unbeaten streak. They played on an unbeaten 13-0 Eight-Man I football state champion and led the Oilers to a 27-0 Class 1A state basketball championship.
Ryan teamed with Paxton Hammeke to finish second in 3A doubles last year. Liebl placed third in 3A doubles with Kade Beck, who graduated last year.
Central Plains Oilers Paxton Hammeke and Lawson Oeser (19-4) finished fourth in doubles with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Hesston’s Isaac Decker-Jeb Carlson.
Oiler J.J. Heredia (21-9) finished fifth in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hesston’s Cole Deutschendorf.
"We qualified three entries out of a very competitive regional," said Central Plains coach Gary Bittner. "We hope that momentum will carry into next weekend. I was very proud of my team."
The Oilers have finished as 3-1A state runner-up the past two years after winning the 2016 team title.
Sterling’s William Weiner, last year’s fourth-place state finisher, defeated Hesston’s Logan Gamble, last year’s sixth-place state finisher, for the singles championship. Hesston (14) edged Sterling (14) for second place on percentage of games won.
The 3-1A state tournament is played May 10-11 at Prairie Village.
