The Derby Twins broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning for an 8-3 Jayhawk League baseball victory Tuesday over the Great Bend Bat Cats at Burns Field. The Bat Cats (5-10) lost their fifth straight game entering Wednesday’s home game against Derby (10-4). The Bat Cats are 0-6 against the top three Jayhawk League teams.
Bat Cats pitcher Drew Repp held the Twins to a 1-1 tie through five innings. Repp benefited from two double plays. Shortstop Ben Sems, second baseman Michael Sinks and first baseman Hunter Romero turned a second-inning double play. Third baseman Peyton Barnes, Sinks and Romero turned a double play in the fourth inning.
Derby’s Noah Bland scored on a first-inning error. Michael Sinks doubled home Peyton Barnes in the fifth inning.
Derby’s Tyler McNamara and Bret Fehr delivered RBIs and Bland and Jacob Means scored on wild pitches for a 5-1 lead.
Ben Sems forced home Hunter Romero on a sixth-inning bases-loaded walk and Brooks Asher scored on a wild pitch for a 5-3 score. Mateo Zunica delivered two base hits.
Derby scored in the final three innings. McNamara delivered a seventh-inning RBI and Fehr scored on an eighth-inning wild pitch.
