GARDEN CITY — Garden City started on fire starting the first three quarters to roll past the Great Bend girls 58-37 in Thursday’s Western Athletic Conference basketball game.
The Buffaloes (10-3, 4-1 WAC) outscored the Panthers 13-3, 9-4 and 14-1 to start the first three quarters for a 36-8 scoring edge. The Panthers rallied in the second period with a 8-2 scoring run and added an 8-4 scoring run for a 28-23 halftime deficit.
But there were no offensive or defensive answers for the Panthers, who were coming off a spectacular performance against Buhler in a 62-33 victory.
Panther sparkplug Sydney Unruh did his part with five steals, several assists, eight points and a pair of 3-pointers. Sadie Spray added eight points and Allyson Kaiser chipped in seven points. But the Panthers were unable to offset 13 of 45 shooting and 17 turnovers.
Great Bend coach Cindy Beck saw some of the Panthers’ issues were self inflicted with poor ballhandling and decision-making. The Panthers (6-9, 0-5 WAC) are scheduled to play Hays-TMP Tuesday and Dodge City Feb. 19 at home.
“We took ourselves out of it,” she said. “That was a frustrating night. We had plans to get shots for players at spots. But we bailed out of our offense for no reason. We didn’t get it down tonight.”
Garden City (10-3, 4-1 WAC) turned several Panther mistakes into easy runout scores. Keyhana Turner enjoyed a perfect shooting night with four field goals and six free throws for 14 points. Aileen Becerril scored 12 points with several assists and Amaya Gallegos chipped in 10 points. The Buffaloes blocked several shots to limit the Panthers’ inside offense.
“We executed our offense better," said Garden City coach Matt Pfeifer. "We were able to swing the ball and change sides better. We turned up the intensity on defense.”
