GBMS 8th-graders down Liberal Eisenhower

LIBERAL – The Great Bend Middle School girls basketball team ended on a winning note with a third-place victory over Liberal Eisenhower in the Western Athletic Tournament.

The Panthers started the finish of a two-day journey to Liberal with a hard-fought loss to Hays before beating Eisenhower for third place.

Denver Ringo sparked the first half and Katherine Mazouch tallied nine points in the second and third quarters.

“We lost to Eisenhower earlier in the season. We wanted a second chance at them, along with a third-place win,” said Great Bend coach Kyle Jeffrey. “It was going to be Ringo’s big day as she scored eight points in the first quarter. But foul trouble kept her the sidelines for a while.

The Panthers downed Liberal Seymour Rogers 41-23 in the opening play-in round. Great Bend led 13-6 after one quarter and 20-10 at halftime. A 36-20 lead finished 41-23.
