GARDEN CITY — The Great Bend Middle School 8th-grade girls captured the Western Athletic Conference cross country championship make their hard work pay off. 

Panther Diane Alvarez was first medalist (13:06.5) with a season-best time in the 2-mile race. She was followed by Marissa Boone, 4th (14:05.5); Darcy Feist, 5th (14:13.0); Reese King, 7th (14:38.1); Kate Welcher, 17th  (15:52.6); McKayla Smith, 20th (16:48.1); and Diana Piedra 23rd (17:40.6).  

The GBMS 7th-grade girls finished in third in the 2-mile WAC race. Addyson Bruce placed 8th (7:08.5); Aliya Johnson, 9th (7:12.0); Kaylea McMullen; 10th  (7:18.5); Josephine Blevins, 24th (8:27.7); Kaylee Haag, 26th (8:46.3); and Hannah Hopkins 28th (9:42.2).  

GBMS 8th-grader Kyler Holinde earned first-place medalist honors with a season-best time (12:00.4). Akirakko Dickerson placed 6th (12:31.4); Trenton Peterson, 13th (13:14.7); and Justin Roller, 26th (14.55.8).

The GBMS 7th-grade boys team finished runnerup. Brantley Vsetecka placed 5th (6:33.9) followed by Ethan Somers, 11th (6:33.9); Joshua Manning, 12th (6:42.1); John Landers, 19th (7:13.5); Brodie Bainbridge, 28th (8:13.3); and Alexis Ayala, 33rd (11:10).
