Area teams head to tennis regionals

Central Kansas League runner-up Larned and Central Plains headline area tennis teams competing for state berths. The top six singles and doubles finishers qualify for the state tournament.

Great Bend competes Saturday at Salina Central featuring Kaylin Wahlmeier (13-11), Lakyn Smith (11-11), Samantha Mayers/Taylor Lashley (14-11) and Clarice Snapp/Mackenzie LaViolette (3-6).

Larned and St. John travel Friday to Goodland, which hit a high temperature of 49 degrees. Central Plains, Hoisington and Ellinwood compete at WaKeeney.

Larned’s Ella McNett (27-0) won No. 2 singles at the CKL tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Smoky Valley’s Kelsee Adam. Larned’s No. 1 singles Abigail Holt (19-4) lost 2-6, 6-1, (10-4) in a championship tiebreaker against Smoky Valley’s Magdalena Rauchholz. 

Larned’s No. 1 doubles Sarah Manry/Reese Watkins (14-9) placed fourth.

Central Plains Oiler Kyla Metro (26-1) has lost one match to Smoky Valley’s Lena Rauchholz 8-6.

Hoisington’s No. 2 doubles Rayna Bray/Lauren Higgins pulled the surprise of the CKL tournament with a 6-1, 3-6 (10-8) tiebreaker victory over Larned’s No. 1 seed Arianna Hemken/Breanna Hemken (23-5), who placed fourth.
