A dress rehearsal for postseason play went flawlessly for the Great Bend Legion baseball Chiefs.
The Chiefs swept AA Hoisington 10-0 and 3-2 Sunday behind standout pitchers Colin Hall (5-2) and Townshend Kurth (6-4). The Chiefs (21-13) yielded no earned runs.
“Our guys pitched really well,” said Great Bend Chiefs coach Travis Kurth. “We didn’t hit the ball all that great. It’s sometimes tough to be focused.”
CHIEFS 10, HOISINGTON 0 (G1) — Kurth fashioned a tidy 58-pitch shutout with three strikeouts. Hoisington’s Derek Boxberger and Grant Gwinner singled.
Calan Haberman scored on a first-inning error. Haberman singled home Christian Zahnter in the second inning.
Joey Soupiset delivered the big hit with a bases-loaded double to score Kurth, Carson Smith and Jayce Kohls in a six-run fourth inning for an 8-0 lead. Riley Smith scored on Zahnter’s sacrifice fly. Alex Schremmer doubled home Haberman. Schremmer scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Haberman scored on Travis Kurth’s groundout and Haberman scored on a passed ball for a 10-run victory in five innings.
CHIEFS 3, HOISINGTON 2 (G2) — Pitchers Colin Hall and Hoisington’s Bransen Schulte dominated with just one earned run in seven innings.
Hoisington led 1-0 when Derek Boxberger scored on a passed ball after reaching on an error and moving up on a bunt by Braxton Donovan. Great Bend’s Carson Smith scored on a second-inning balk after getting hit by a pitch followed by a walk and groundout.
Hoisington handed the Chiefs two third-inning runs with two errors as Haberman and Schremmer scored on passed balls for a 3-1 lead.
Bransen Schulte singled home Braxton Donovan for a sixth-inning run.
