HAYS — Great Bend's boys battled to the finish in a 67-59 loss to Millwood, Okla. at the Hays Shootout. Alex Schrmmer led the Panthers with 31 points and six 3-pointers. The Panther girls were routed 76-20 against Millwood in Friday's Shootout.

Millwood is a 15-time Oklahoma state basketball champion, the second most in Oklahoma history. Last year's 3A state runner-up was sparked by 6-foot-5 Isaiah Williams with 30 points. Harold Bagby added 13 points.

The Panthers led briefly when Ray Kuhlman nailed a 3-pointer for a 34-33 lead. Schremmer kept the Panthers within range with a sparkling 12-point scoring burst. Schremmer hit a 3-pointer and converted seven consecutive free throws for a 50-49 score.

"Alex had a great game and kept us in it," said Great Bend coach Tim Brooks. "It says a lot they started to defend him with a 6-5 player."

The Panthers misfired down the stretch with back-to-back turnovers that sparked Millwood's 10-2 run for a 60-51 lead. Jaylen Dillard scored six points during that stretch.

The Panthers performed at a much higher level than their opener — a 71-47 loss to Manhattan. Millwood knocked down eight 3-pointers and made 20 of 44 field goals.

"We played 3-2 zone and gave them trouble," Brooks said. "But they found avenues and shot it well. Give credit to them. We didn't realize they would shoot it that well. We adjusted well to the style of play and we adjusted physically."

Kuhlman played his best career game with 13 points along with a solid floor game.

"Ray Kuhlman is playing with confidence. He's a coach dream because he understands the game," Brooks said. "We played better tonight. We talk about getting better every day and we battled better and played with more flow and moved the ball better. We had good contributions from people off the bench."

MILLWOOD, OKLA. 76, GREAT BEND GIRLS 20 — The nightmare continues for the Great Bend girls basketball team. The Panthers had a challenge doing much right in a 76-20 second-round loss to Millwood, Okla. Sparkplug Sydney Unruh scored nine points plus her usual solid floor game. Jenna Mauler scored four points.

The Oklahoma 3A qualifier from last year overpowered the Panthers with a lethal mix of speed and athleticism. The Panthers converted 7 of 32 field goals and had a challenge getting quality shots against Millwood.

Millwood's TaLiyah Gramling (12), Syncere Herrod (11) and Alysia Pickett (10) scored in double figures.

"From top-to-bottom, they are extremely fast," said Great Bend coach Carrie Minton. "They have size and quickness. Every moment it was an extremely tough match-up for us. We rushed shots because of their quickness. We panicked and didn't get set shooting the basketball. They challenged us every minute. We made two steps forward and one step back. Today, was hopefully a growth day for us."
