VALLEY CENTER — Great Bend's No. 1 ranked Wyatt Weber (138) stayed on course for a repeat state championship with a hard-earned 3-1 victory over Newton's No. 2 ranked Colin Bybee. Weber (39-3) will likely see Bybee in next week's 5A state tournament at Park City. Weber upset Bonner Springs' No. 1 ranked Cruz Lara (1:20) to capture last year's 138-pound
Great Bend's Kaden Spragis (38-7, 120) and Avery Wolf (36-10, 126) finished as regional runners-up. Newton's No. 2 ranked A.B. Stokes edged No. 3 ranked Spragis 3-1 in the regional championship. Spragis lost in last year's state final 7-3 to Newton's Nick Treaster. Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel's Bubba Wright pinned Wolf (3:24) in the championship match. Wolf placed fourth at state last year.
Great Bend's nine state qualifiers include fifth-place finishers Brody Schnoebelen (31-17, 195) and Keyven Schroeder (21-13, 220), seventh-place finishers Cooper Liles (18-13, 132) and Matthew Johnson (27-18, 182) and eighth-place placers Jace Schartz (24-20, 145) and Skyler McMullen (22-19, 152).
In final matches, Schnoebelen defeated Carroll's Broc Eastman 8-0 and Schroeder pinned Arkansas City's AIsaac Stevens (1:35) for fifth place. Liles beat Maize South's Josh Berlin 7-2; and Johnson defeated Newton's Brody Harper 9-0 for seventh place. Salina Central's Dawson Hogan pinned Schartz (3:34) and Hays High's Aaron Weigel defeated McMullen, 7-4 for seventh place.
Great Bend scored 128 points to finish fifth behind regional champion Goddard and runner-up Newton.
