Great Bend was a minute away from a tie when Manhattan High’s Hunter French broke the Panthers’ collective heart.

French’s score with 44 seconds left in overtime beat the Panthers 2-1 in Thursday’s non-league soccer game at Cavanaugh Field. Great Bend (4-3) plays at Hays High Tuesday.

Great Bend’s Francisco Garcia handed the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the first half when Manhattan tied the score with 15 minutes left in regulation. Panther goalie Daniel Cervantes worked a shutout for 65 minutes in 90-degree heat with a heat index approaching 100.

“Daniel had some great saves,” said Great Bend coach Jesus Loera. “That’s a heartbreaker. That’s definitely our toughest loss.”

The Panthers played into the south wind the first 10 minutes of overtime. Manhattan scored against the wind in the final 10 minutes.

Loera said the Panthers outshot the Indians 12-7 and had seven shots on goal behind a solid passing game.

“We played a good game. We controlled time of possession and outshot Manhattan, but they put two shots past the goalie,” Loera said. “It was a hard-fought, physical soccer game.”

Loera said the Indians played a disciplined style.

“Manhattan was the best organized team we’ve played,” Loera said. “Everyone did their job on their team and they played fast. They were a good team.”
