Dodge City roared to nine victories and three pins to down the Panthers 41-24 in Thursday's Western Athletic Conference wrestling showdown.
Great Bend's defending state champion Wyatt Weber (138) and 5A state runner-up Kaden Spragis (126) earned wins via pins. Fourth-place state placer No. 6 Avery Wolf (120) and Keyven Schroeder (220) earned forfeit wins for the Panthers 24 points.
No. 1 ranked Weber pinned No. 3 ranked Rudy Hernandez, DC (3:40) in the night's premier match.
Two Panthers lost hard-fought matches. Dodge City's No. 5 ranked Josh Gonzales defeated Vaiden Weinrich, 4-3 at 160 pounds. Dodge City's Jesus Lopez edged Matthew Johnson, 4-2 at 182 pounds.
Dodge City features defending state champion Damian Mendez (132), state runner-up Ismael Ramirez (145), state runner-up Luke Barber (170), fifth-place and No. 4 ranked Roman Lota (195) and No. 6 ranked Dylan Wainscott (113).
GREAT BEND GIRLS — Returning state champion Breanna Ridgeway (132) pinned Dodge City's Kirsten Heinz (0:30) and No. 6 ranked Sierra Ferguson (143) pinned Dodge City's Valeria Hernandez (0:52). Karley Stukey (101) and Kynslee White (191) earned forfeit wins.
Dodge City won eight matches to sweep past the Panthers 41-24 in Thursday's dual match. No. 3 ranked Ariana De La Rosa defeated No. 4 ranked Daizy Gomez 4-0 in a 126-pound matchup of state-ranked wrestlers.
Last year's state runner-up Ashley Arroyo (155), No. 5 ranked Dayanara Garcia (138) and No. 3 ranked Jolette Almarez (170) won on pins.
