HAYS — Manhattan's 6-foot-3 transfer Zanaa Cordis made a stunning first impression for the Indians. Cordis scored 18 points and dominated defensively as the Indians held off Great Bend's girls 51-41 in Thursday's Hays Shootout Basketball Tournament.

Cordis scored 16 first-half points and blocked several shots as the Indians led 31-18 at halftime. Cordis dominated the paint with second-chance points and field goals over the shorter Panthers. Aloera Ostermann converted a trio of 3-pointers and scored 14 points. Manhattan converted 18 of 38 field goals and 11 of 18 free throws.

Manhattan, a perennial 6A state qualifier, rolled to a 21-point lead before the Panthers rallied in the second half. The Panthers used a balanced offense to outscore the Indians by 11 points in the final 10 minutes.

Panther Sydney Unruh was her usual sparkplug with six points and third-quarter assists to Alyssa Herter and Ashlynn Harbaugh that generated an improved second-half effort. Halle Latham, Jenna Mauler and Taryn Warren each scored seven points.

Great Bend (0-1) lost its 19th consecutive game after an 18-game losing streak to end last season. The Panthers, 1-20 last year, showed vast improvement from last year. The Panthers play Millwood, Okla. at 6 p.m. Friday at Hays Middle School.

MANHATTAN  BOYS 71, GREAT BEND 47 — An experienced and tall and talented Manhattan team was paced by Raeshon Riddick with 21 points and Peyton Weixelman with 17 points and five 3-pointers. Riddick dominated the opening half with 16 points en route to a 40-28 halftime lead.

The Panthers were within 29-22 when Manhattan finished the half on an 11-6 scoring run. Weixelman converted four 3-pointers in the second half to put the game away. Manhattan outscored the Panthers 31-19 after halftime.

"We had to play zone," said Great Bend coach Tim Brooks. "They threw it over the zone and read what was open. They hit some big 3s in that one stretch."

Nine Panthers scored. Alex Schremmer rallied after a slow start with nine points and strong ballhandling and passing. Sam Ryan scored the Panthers' first basket and scored eight points. Ray Kuhlman added seven points. Bryce Brown scored a career high six points. The Panthers made 14 of 57 field goals.

Brooks said it was a difficult matchup against a talented Manhattan basketball team. The Panthers play Millwood, Okla. at 8:15 p.m. Friday at Hays Middle School.

"It was very hard," Brooks said. "For the most part, we really battled into the third quarter. We had lulls where we stood around and watched them rebound, I didn't think that would happen."

The Panthers started the game with nine field goal misses and started the third quarter with 1-of-9 shooting.

"We got some good looks," Brooks said. "But when you don't shoot the ball, you hurry and take bad shots. We've got to be more consistent with our play."

Brooks said the opener was a tough way to start, but he liked some things he saw.

"Everyone did some good things. The guys off the bench played hard," he said. "We'll see who gets out there and plays comfortable."
