LARNED — A stingy zone defense frustrated the Larned Indians Tuesday as Haven coasted to a 62-34 Central Kansas League victory.
Following a close 12-10 first quarter, Haven outscored Larned 17-5 in the second quarter and forged a 29-15 halftime advantage.
Haven used a full-court trapping zone defense that bothered Larned’s ball handlers and created 10 first half turnovers for the Indians. That and poor shooting by Larned left the Indians staring at the big halftime deficit.
Larned made 5 of 23 first half shot attempts as the bigger, faster Wildcats looked like a team ready for a big post-season push.
“We got frustrated and let the missed shots get in our head," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "We let that affect other parts of our game. I was happy with the first quarter but once we started missing a lot of shots we kind of hung our head and Haven is good enough that they will make you pay in transition.”
Larned scored five points in the second quarter and three came at the buzzer by Andreus Tucker. Ten turnovers and 22% shooting left Larned searching for answers at halftime.
Haven continued the run in the third stanza as they outscored the Indians 20-10 behind some crafty passing and the inside play of 6’3” Hunter Barlow to have a third quarter lead of 49-25.
The fast-breaking Haven Wildcats shot 24 of 54 from the field and converted 6 of 14 free throws.
They had balanced scoring as Hunter Barlow and Zane Jacques each had 13 while Darby Roper and Benaiah Yoder added 9 apiece. Haven improved their record to 7-1 for the season and 2-0 in Central Kansas League play.
Larned made 12 of 49 field goal attempts for 25%. They converted 6 of 9 free throws.
Andreus Tucker had 10 points while Ethan Haas added eight and Carlos Ibarra and Layton Crosby posted six apiece.
Larned (4-4, 0-1 CKL) travels to Pratt Friday for a Central Kansas League game.
