LARNED—The Larned boys used a 21-5 second-quarter blitz to blow by the taller Macksville Mustangs 56-36 in Friday’s Gene Keady semifinals. The Indians (3-1) met St. John in Saturday’s championship.

The second quarter run was keyed by an aggressive fullcourt trapping defense that created 10 Macksville turnovers. The Indians raced to a 32-13 halftime advantage.

The smaller, quicker Larned players shifted between man-to-man and zone defenses, preventing Macksville from benefitting from 6-5 Kaleb Lickiss, 6-5 Kody Mead and 6-2 Karson Waters.

“We knew we had to counter their size advantage by attacking their guards and creating turnovers,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. “We could not allow them to dump passes into their post players. We used multiple defenses to our advantage.”

By the end of the third quarter the Indians held a 51-27 advantage and the only thing in doubt was the final score.

Larned’s Chance Sanger and Jaylen Thomas each scored 16 points and Brayden Rupp added eight points.Macksville 8 5 14 5 — 36
