The Hoisington Cardinal Wrestling team continued to dominate in the after Christmas part of their season. The team won the Hoisington Cardinal Classic Wrestling Tournament this past Friday to remain undefeated in tournaments and duals after the break. Fresh off the heels of their big win at the Bob Kuhn Classic just six days before, the Cardinals kept their foot on the pedal by sending eight wrestlers to the finals, and placing 12 in the top four.
The tournament win was special for six wrestlers as the Friday night tournament was Senior night. The six seniors on the team, who fill four of the varsity spots, are: two time State Qualifier Landon Harmon at 120; three time State Champion Brandon Ball at 138; 6th at State last year Chance Boor at 195 lbs.; and KC Stephens at 220 lbs. class. The remaining two seniors on the squad are: Tyler Walker at 152, and Girls State Champion Lexi Sanders who has had to sit out this year due to an injury.
The team was led by four champions: senior Brandon Ball, 138; sophomore Jonathan Ball, 145; fresman Christopher Ball, 152; and sophomore Landen Urban, 285 lbs. class. Senior Landon Harmonm 120l junior Kody Lang, 126; junior Austin McHenry, 182; and senior Chance Boor, 195, placed 2nd. Fresman Tanner Cassity ,113 placed third; freshman Sean Urban, 160; and senior KC Stephens placed 4th.
Next action for the team will come this Saturday when the team travels to Phillipsburg to wrestle in the Panther Classic. With Norton Ranked number 1 in class 1-3A and Marysville ranked number 5 along Hoisington ranked number 3 in the latest polls the tournament should host some outstanding match-ups.
Coaches comments: “It was a very good evening for our seniors to put in their high school memory books. The kids wrestled very well. We still have some important cogs on the team that need to get headed in the right direction if we want to have a shot at bringing home hardware from the State Tournament. Consistency is still eluding our team at certain weights. It is not too late for that consistency to evolve, but it needs to happen very soon or we will be talking about how we just missed at the State Tournament from meeting our goal.”
