HOISINGTON — Hoisington pitcher Taylor Boxberger threw a two-hit shutout and the Cardinals swept Smoky Valley 10-0 and 9-4 in Tuesday’s Central Kansas League softball doubleheader. Hoisington (4-0) plays at Pratt (3-1) April 9.
HOISINGTON 10, SMOKY VALLEY 0 (G1) — Boxberger struck out five batters and yielded a double to Claire Broxterman and a single to Emmie Ryals.
Hoisington’s Bailee Bachar singled and scored a first-inning run on Skylar Eidson’s groundball. Courtesy runner Destiny Hurley scored on a fourth-inning error for a 2-0 lead.
Trinity Dolezal singled home Bachar after a double to start a four-run fifth inning. Jenna Urban doubled home courtesy runner Kenzie Wolf. Boxberger’s right-field double scored and Dolezal and Urban for a 6-0 lead.
Brooke Steinert doubled and scored on an error to ignite a four-run sixth inning. Alyward’s right-field triple scored Riley Brungardt and Bachar. Dolezal scored the game-ending 10th run on Urban’s misplayed groundball.
HOISINGTON 9, SMOKY VALLEY 4 (G2) — Hoisington outscored the Vikings 6-0 after trailing 4-3 after 41/2 innings.
Jenna Urban drove home three runs. Starter Kassidy Nixon and Boxberger combined for nine strikeouts.
Aylward’s double scored Bachar and Shaylah Kempke in the third inning. Aylward scored on Kadence Urban’s single for a 3-0 lead.
Viking Emmie Ryals doubled home Addison Fishback in the fourth inning. Olivia Morgan scored on a groundout to start a three-run fifth inning. Kira Haxton scored on Lindsey Gerlach’s single. Gerlach scored on Addison Haiden’s single for a 4-3 lead.
Steinert made the Viking pay for a fifth-inning error and hit batter with a double that scored Jenna Urban and Kadence Urban. Steinert scored on Brungardt’s groundball that was misplayed for a 6-4 lead.
Jenna Urban’s sixth-inning three-run homer scored Aylward and Dolezal after a walk and hit batter for a 9-4 lead.
