PHILLIPSBURG — Hoisington's Bralen Thompson picked a perfect time for a career high 32 points. Thompson knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and 9-of-9 free throws to spark the Cardinals past pesky Phillipsburg 60-54 in Thursday's non-league basketball game.

Thompson and Leyton Haxton combined for seven 3-pointers. Haxton scored 12 points. Chase Steinert made the game's biggest play with a steal and layup for a 60-52 lead after the Panthers sliced a 17-point lead (54-37) to 58-52.

"Bralen played tough tonight," said Hoisington coach Kyle Haxton. "He played a heck of a game at both ends. We found a way to finish it. That was a battle."

Hoisington (7-7) is tied with Scott City for fifth in the 3A Goodland substate behind Hays TMP (10-3), Norton (8-5), Phillipsburg (9-6) and Russell (8-6).

The Panthers' attacking pressure defense forced 30 Cardinal turnovers, 20 after halftime. But the Cardinals survived thanks to defense that limited the Panthers to 3 of 17 shooting from 3-point range.

"We were solid defensively all night," Haxton said. "Their pressure and physicality got to us. You've got to learn to play like that. "

Phillipsburg's hustling Rod Rodriguez scored 17 points and Jesse Blackburn contributed 13 points.
