ELLINWOOD — Ellinwood quarterback Landon Simpson was on fire with six rushing touchdowns and a passing score in a wild 59-27 victory over Caldwell/South Haven South Sumner. Simpson rushed for 328 yards, averaging 22 yards per attempt.
Simpson rushed for 246 yards on his six touchdown runs of 20, 21, 31, 45, 46 and 73 yards behind terrific cutback running. Ellinwood's offensive line of tackles Nathan Hammeke and Nick Miller, guards Cooper Gunn and Austin Shinliver, center Trace Tudor and tight end Braden Lewis paced the way for a school record 612 yards rushing on 50 attempts.
Teammate Drake Hosman matched Simpson’s night with 163 yards rushing and a 97-yard touchdown after the Eagles turned back South Sumner at the goal-line for a 47-19 lead. Ellinwood’s Cason Merritt scored a rushing touchdown and Ty Hammeke caught a 20-yard scoring pass from Simpson.
Tavian McCaffrey led the defense with four tackles and 11 assists. Austin Brack contributed three tackles and four assists.
Ellinwood (4-1, 1-1 District) drops South Sumner to 2-3, 0-2 in 1A, District 7. The Eagles scored the most points in 11-man football since 1979 when Ellinwood downed St. John 68-0.
The Outlaws' Alex Shore returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. Shore caught 4, 10 and 11-yard scoring passes from quarterback Mak Blosser.
