LARNED – Larned’s boys beat Kinsley 43-38 and the Larned girls downed Kinsley 44-14 in Tuesday's Gene Keady Basketball Classic.
Larned's Carson Shaver (13), Cade Colglazier (11) and Carter Crosby (10) scored in double figures. The Indians made 15 of 39 field goals (38%) and converted 10 of 18 free throws.
Kinsley's Kaden Arensman scored 14 points. Kinsley made 11 of 34 shots (32%) and made 4 of 8 free throws.
“We didn’t shoot well. We acted like we didn’t know what to do against zone," said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. "We need to move the ball better and moveas we attack zone. I liked that we got to the free throw line in the fourth quarter."
The Larned boys jumped out to a 9-2 first-quarter lead and 19-12 at halftime. Kinsley pulled within two points before Larned regained control. Crosby's coring and free throws outscored Kinsley 15-6 in the fourth quarter.
Larned’s man-to-man defense handcuffed Kinsley. Larned’s struggled with Kinsley’s 2-3 zone. Kinsley (0-2) plays Bucklin Thursday and Larned (1-1) plays Reno County Friday.
LARNED GIRLS – Larned’s tenacious defense forced Kinsley into 29 turnovers, which the Indians converted into easy scores for an 18-6 first quarter lead that was 26-6 by halftime.
Larned's Akielah Collins scored 13 points and Jaidyn Pinkston and Jadyn Crosby each scored seven. Kinsley’s Mackenzie Herrmann scored five points.
“Our goal was to play with energy," Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "We defended and I liked the hustle. For us to win, it starts on the defensive end.”
Larned made 18 of 52 shots (35%) and Kinsley (0-2) made 5 for 23 (21%). Kinsley plays Reno County Thursday and Larned (1-1) plays Bucklin Friday.
