Larned football faces test at Hesston Friday

LARNED — Larned’s revenge tour started just perfectly when the Indians roared past Smoky Valley 36-12 in Friday’s Central Kansas League opener. 

Larned (1-0) will continue the task of flipping last year’s 0-9 record at Hesston (1-0) Friday.

Larned tailback Mason Perez scored touchdowns on 55- and 77-yard runs the first two times he touched the football last week. Quarterback Dillan Smith completed touchdown passes to Luke Wilson and Braydon Lemuz. 

Hesston QB Jacob Eilert passed for 204 yards and two touchdowns to Brady Cox. TB Max Arnold rushed for 107 yards and two scores in a 43-14 victory over Hillsboro. Hesston gained 473 offensive yards.


MACKSVILLE (1-0) at NESS CITY (1-0) — Macksville quarterback Ryan Kuckelman rushed for three touchdowns and Michael Seward scored three rushing touchdowns in a 52-6 rout over Kinsley.

Ness City’s Gavin Scheiber caught a 24-yard scoring pass from Jose Guzman with three seconds left to stun Central Plains 36-30. Back Hector Rodriguez scored three touchodnw and gained 170 yards.


HOISINGTON (1-0) at NICKERSON (0-1) — Hoisington wingback Hunter Morris gained 84 yards with three scores and all-state Wyatt Pedigo gained 115 yards with two touchdowns in a 37-13 rout over Pratt. Nickerson managed 89 yards rushing and 22 yards passing in a 38-0 loss to Halstead. But the Panthers earned four defensive takeaways.


CENTRAL PLAINS (0-1) at VICTORIA (1-0) — Central Plains Oiler Jerred Bieberle gained 148 yards and RB Lawson Oeser scored two touchdowns in a 36-30 loss to Ness City. Victoria QB Grant Schoenrock passed for two scores and RB Drayden Karlin and Jayvon Pruitt each scored twice in a 42-14 rout over Otis-Bison.  


WESKAN (1-0) at PAWNEE HEIGHTS (1-0) — Expect a typical 6-man shootout after defending 6-man state champion 

Weskan beat Rolla 77-31 and Pawnee Heights downed Western Plains 54-6 last week. Weskan QB Jace Mackley threw for 44 TDs and 2,116 yards and scored 10 times with 767 rushing yards last year. 

Pawnee Heights captured the 2017 state title. Tiger RB Braden Colglazier rushed for 112 yards and two scores and caught two TD passes from QB Fabian Flores. RB Jackson Henbest scored two rushing TDs. Flores threw for 116 yards and completed a TD pass to Keaton Thompson. Flores, Aden Gilliland and Cody Amspacker recovered fumbles.


OTIS-BISON (0-1) at BUCKLIN (0-1) — Otis-Bison QB Kaden Foust rushed for two touchdowns and TB Bevan Gradig gained 90 yards rushing in a 42-14 loss to Victoria. South Central beat Bucklin 56-8 behind Gage Girk’s two interceptions returns for TDs.


SUBLETTE (0-1) at ELLINWOOD (0-1) — Ellinwood WR David Hammeke scored on a 30-yard interception return and caught a 20-yard scoring strike from QB Kyler Doll in a 63-19 loss to LaCrosse, which passed for 329 yards.


STAFFORD (0-1) at MINNEOLA (0-1) — Norwich rolled past Stafford 48-0 and Minneola lost 34-18 to Kiowa County last week. Minneola’s Tuck Lang gained 125 yards and scored two TDs. Brayton Dewell gained 60 yards with a score.


ST. JOHN (0-1) at KINSLEY (0-1) — Kinsley snapped a 19-game losing streak with a 36-24 victory last year. St. John is riding a 14-game losing streak heading to Kinsley. Medicine Lodge beat St. John 68-0 and Macksville beat Kinsley 52-6 last week.
