LARNED — A strong second half propelled the Larned boys past upset-minded Kinsley in Monday's Keady Basketball Classic, 57-36. The game remained in doubt into the third quarter.

The Coyotes came out firing led by Cole Gleason's three 3-pointers to lead 15-8 after one quarter. The Indians' man-to-man defense had trouble closing out on Kinsley's outside shooters.

Larned switched to a second quarter zone defense and worked the ball inside to Layton Crosby and Dillan Smith for close-in baskets. The Indians led 25-21 at halftime.

Kinsley converted six 3-pointers the first half. Larned dominated the paint and used a half-court trap that paid dividends with 26 Kinsley turnovers.

"We weren't patient with our offense and our man-to-man defense was not good," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. ""Give Kinsley credit. They had a good game plan and their kids came out hot."

Larned led 41-31 after three quarters and coasted in the fourth quarter on better free throw shooting.

"Our defense was better in the second half," Smith said. That keyed a lot of turnovers and more easy baskets."

Kinsley made 12 of 31 shots for 39%. Cole Gleason scored 12 points while Isaac Bowman added 11. Kinsley plays Spearville Wednesday.

Larned made 22 of 50 field goal attempts for 44% and 10 of 16 free throws. Dillan Smith and Layton Crosby each scored 14 points and Jack Stelter added 12. Larned plays St. John Thursday.
