Larned girls win Keady Classic opener

LARNED — The Larned girls pitched a shutout in the first quarter (15-0) and raced past Kinsley 47-11 in Monday’s Gene Keady Basketball Classic.

Behind a suffocating man-to-man defense the Lady Indians forced 15 first half turnovers enroute to a 28-6 lead that was extended to 40-7 after three quarters. Kinsley committd 27 turnovers that led to numerous easy baskets for Larned. 

“Yes, I was pleased with how we played defense, especially early,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. “The girls are beginning to understand that defense will be our key to winning. It was a great team effort.”

Jadyn Pinkston led all scorers with 10 while Akeila Collins had nine and Maddie Reinert seven. Larned (1-1) plays defending champion Spearville Friday. Larned made 19 of 51 field goal attempts for 37%.

Kinsley converted 4 of 30 shots for 11%. Brylea German scored four points. Kinsley plays Macksville Thursday.

LARNED – Defending champion Spearville converted 30 turnovers into a 45-36 victory over Macksville in Monday’s Gene Keady Basketball Classic. Stein led a balanced offense with 10 points.

Macksville’s Mayce Russell scored 17 points. Abi Ibarra contributed eight rebounds and seven assists. Joselin Garcia had seven steals.

LARNED — St. John's Darby Smith and Heidi Fisher each scored 13 points  for a 48-16 victory over the Ellis girls in Tuesday's Gene Keady Basketball Classic. The Tigers (2-0) play Hoisington (1-1) in Friday's semifinals.

LARNED — Hoisington's Macy Hanzlick scored 22 points and Addy Mason converted a career high six 3-pointers and scored 20 points to spark the Cardinals past Bucklin 66-20 in Tuesday's Gene Keady Basketball Classic. Mason converted five 3-pointers before halftime. Jordyn Boxberger contributed 10 points. The Cardinals (1-1) play St. John in Friday's semifinals.
