McPHERSON — The Great Bend Chiefs, a Class AAA American Legion baseball team, closed the regular season in grand style.
The Chiefs outlasted McPherson 17-14 in a nine-inning slugfest on Wednesday night on the road.
Great Bend (16-15) will be entering next week’s zone tournament on a high note after totaling 16 hits against McPherson. Nick Ney led the way for the Chiefs, coming a double shy of the cycle.
The Chiefs used a reciprocal effort on the mound with Cole Smith, Jeff Pike and Mitch Kottas all throwing valuable innings.
Kottas sat out Tuesday night’s doubleheader split with Hutchinson at Al Burns Memorial Field. Kottas, who was held out for precautionary measures, was hit in the ear by a line drive the night before in a doubleheader loss at Pratt, leavig the game in the third inning.
The Chiefs will be travling to Dodge City for the three-team zone tournament. The two teams will play at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and the other team is Hays.
