Things went swimmingly for the Golden Belt Swim Squad in their first meet of the season.
Golden Belt won the meet with 1,018 points, beating second-place Guymon, which finished with 605.5.
First-year Swim Squad head coach Kody Cook said that the older group that swam in the afternoon at Kirkman Activity Center had a number of time improvements, but he saw a need for more conditioning.
“They did well,” Cook said. “Some of them, they’re not getting their best times, but they all had good times for it being this early in the season. We’ve only had five or six practices with them.
“A lot them improved their first two or three races, and then added some time.”
Justin Kuhlman led the afternoon session with four pool records.
He finished first in the 100 backstroke (59.50 seconds), 100 butterfly (1:00.50),  200 individual medley (2:15.07) and 500 freestyle (5:33.56).
Kuhlman also won the 50 freestyle (23.75).
“He swam really well today,” Cook said. “He really put it to it and beared down. He just went for them. A lot of those records, they weren’t easy for him, but he went for it.”
The girls’ 15-and-over 200 freestyle relay team — Michaela Cape, Kallyn Blessing, Katy Jerke and Hannah Hildebrand — set a pool record with a time of 1:57.27.
“That was a 10-year-old record that they broke,” Cook said. “They broke it by a good chunk. That was really good.”
Cook said he was happy with how the young group did during the morning session, which had several kids turn in times that qualified them for the Division-I and Division-II meets at the end of the season.
“I think they did really well,” Cook said. “Some of our nine- and 10-year-olds swam really well. They improved their times from last year. We had a lot of D-I and D-II times already, which was surprising.
“I’ve been here five or six years now, and I don’t remember having that many D-I and D-II times this soon for the younger group.”
Leading the younger group was the Golden Belt 10-and-under girls’ 200 medley relay, consisting of Rachel Panzer, Aubrey Snapp, Ruthie Williams and McKenna Cape. The team set a Swim Squad pool record with a time of 3:09.24.
Panzer, Snapp and Cape joined Zoe Jerke set a pool record in the 10-and-under 200 freestyle relay, clocking in at 2:41.67.
The boys’ 10-and-under 200 freestyle relay team of Cal Dunekack, Matt Huslig, Jacob Kennedy and Isaac Mountain set a pool record of 2:23.66.
