LAKIN — The Great Bend Golden Belt swim squad continued its winning ways, narrowly defeating Scott City at the Lakin meet on Saturday.
Golden Belt finished in the lead with 740 points with Scott City right behind them with 702.
“It was definitely the closest meet in terms of the final score,” Golden Belt head coach Steve Beaumont said. “We were behind after the morning session, but we were able to catch up with 10 to 12 minutes left.”
Rachel Panzer continues to lead the eight-and-under girls, taking three first-place finishes at Lakin in the 25-yard freestyle (19.25 seconds), 25 butterfly (24.84) and 25 backstroke (24.69).
Zoe Jerke took first place in the eight-and-under division in the 100 freestyle.
Cal Dunekack led the eight-and-under boys with three first place finishes — 25 freestyle (18.10), 25 butterfly (22.36) and 100 individual medley (2:04.07). He also took second place in the 25 backstroke (25.13).
Beaumont said it wasn’t that the younger kids weren’t swimming well, but that Scott City had a larger number of young kids to compete that Golden Belt behind after the morning session.
“They all swam well,” Beaumont said. “Scott City has a lot of young kids. They put a lot of kids in that morning session. It was just a numbers thing.”
Kira Cook, who competed in the 12-and-under division, took home a pair of gold medals for the 50 butterfly (33.65) and the 50 breaststroke (38.95).
Isaac Panzer took five gold medals in the 10-and-under division, finishing in first in the 50 freestyle (33.05), 50 butterfly (39.27), 50 backstroke (45.53), 50 breaststroke (48.13) and 100 freestyle (1:19.23).
“We are kind of at the point where a lot of younger kids are trying new events, longer races and different strokes,” Beaumont said. “We had a lot of kids in the butterfly for the first time, in the individual medley for the first time. The younger kids swam really well this weekend.”
In the 15-and-over division, Hagen Boehmer took first place in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.40).
Hannah Hildebrand finished in first place in a pair of events, 100 butterfly (1:08.47) and the 100 backstroke (1:12.88).
Allison Damm had a pair of first-place finishes, one in the 200 I.M. (2:42.42) and the other in the 200 freestyle (2:18.30).
“It got extremely hot in the afternoon,” Beaumont said. “You know, it doesn’t really matter that it’s a pool. It makes it a challenge. The kids are only in the water a short time and then they are standing around waiting for their next race.
“We have some older kids trying out new races. Others are trying to knock off some time to qualify for the combined meet here in a couple of weeks.”
