After winning half of their four games at the 2012 Kansas Grand Slam Wood Bat Tournament in Salina, the Great Bend Chiefs will be taking their lumber to Hays this weekend.
Class AAA American Legion Great Bend, 7-9 on the season, will be playing Friday, Saturday and Sunday at different locations in Hays at the Wild West Fest Tournament, featuring wood bats.
The Chiefs play Thomas More Prep on its home field on Friday at 9 a.m., followed by an 11:15 a.m. game with the Kansas Crush.
On Saturday, Great Bend plays Fort Morgan, Colo., at Larks Park, starting at 1:30 p.m., followed by a 6:15 game with North Platte, Neb.
From the opening two days of results, seedings will be in place for the final day on Sunday, with the championship game set start to at 3:45.
Earlier in the week, on Monday, the final day of the Salina tourney, Great Bend gave Millard North, out of Omaha, Neb., all kinds of fits in a 9 a.m. game before falling in the bottom of the seventh inning, 5-4, in walk-off fashion.
In their second game on Monday, the Chiefs pulled away for a 10-6 win over Topeka’s Kansas Titans.
Here are the highlights: Mitch Kottas went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in; Jace Bowman had a two-run triple; Bryce Beck crushed a solo homer that traveled just short of 400 feet; and pitcher Braden Jones didn’t allow any runs the final three innings and finished with a complete-game six-hitter.
