DODGE CITY – Macksville's Rogelio Ibarra led four Mustangs in double figures with 13 points to spark a 66-54 victory over Solomon for third place in the Class 1A Division 1 state basketball tournament. Macksville's Alexis Barron (12), Diego Esparza (12) and Lance Lickiss (12) also scored in double figures.
The Mustangs roared to a 26-8 lead with a flawless first quarter. Macksville converted six 3-pointers to outscore Solomon 18-3 from 3-point range.
The Mustangs (22-3) return everyone except Alex Mendez for next year's Central Prairie League and postseason run. The Mustangs have qualified for state basketball 17 times with state titles in 2003 and 2011 by coach Jeff Kuckelman.
Solomon's Makaen Hastings scored 19 points in the Gorillas' first state basketball trip since 1920.
