KISMET — The Southwestern Heights Mustangs exploited Ellinwood for seven rushing touchdowns and 44 second-half points for a crucial 56-28 2A, District 7 football victory.
A victory would’ve clinched a 2A playoff berth for Ellinwood. Now, Ellinwood (3-4, 1-3 District) is targeted to be on the outside of the playoff picture. The Mustangs (2-5, 2-2 District) move into playoff contention.
Mustang back Efren Mercado rushed for 353 yards and scored four touchdowns and halfback Demitro Flores gained 181 yards with three touchdowns.
Ellinwood quarterback Kyler Doll connected with Brandon Carr and David Hammeke for touchdown passes. Doll and Hammeke scored rushing touchdowns.
Ellinwood tailback Kody Koetter missed the second half with a shoulder injury.
