McPHERSON— A wild pitch scored Anson Hall but it was the only offense Great Bend could establish as the Newton Knights rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Chiefs Friday at McPherson’s Grant Sports Complex.
The loss ends a successful 2015 run for coach Roger Ward and the Chiefs with a final season record of 23-20.
The Knights climbed on the board in the bottom of the second inning as Newton’s Kyler Swelly scored on a single by Cole Koerner.
Hall’s run came in the Great Bend half of the third to knot the game at one.
Things turned ugly for the Chiefs from that point forward as Newton used a six run, two hit third inning to take a 7-1 lead as the Knights sailed through their entire lineup in that frame.
Defensive miscues in the bottom of the fifth proved to be the Chiefs’ undoing as the Knights plated two more runs ending the game on the mercy rule.
Brady Michel bagged a pair of doubles to add to his three other doubles earlier in the tournament. Michel posted a double in Thursday’s 6-3 loss to state tournament host McPherson. He opened the tournament Wednesday with a pair of RBI doubles and a single in an 11-0 shutout victory over Oskaloosa.
