The Central Plains Oiler girls capture the St. John Mid-Winter Basketball Classic championship with a 56-32 victory over Wichita Sunrise Academy. The No, 1 ranked 1A Oilers are 12-1.

CENTRAL PLAINS GIRLS 56, SUNRISE 32 (CHAMPIONSHIP)

ST. JOHN – Central Plains Most Valuable Player Brynna Hammeke and All-Tournament pick Kassidy Nixon each scored 16 points as the No. 1 ranked 1A Oilers sped past Wichita Sunrise 56-32 in Saturday’s St. John Mid-Winter Girls Basketball Classic. All-tournament Madison McGuire added 12 points for the Oilers (11-1).

Also named all-tournament were St. John’s Darby Smith and Sunrise’s Samijay Ellis.

ST. JOHN – St. John's Heidi Fisher scored 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers as the Tigers defeated Macksville 51-18 for third place in Saturday’s St. John Mid-Winter Girls Basketball Classic. 

Darby Smith earned all-tournament honors and scored nine points. Macksville's Isabela Ortiz scored seven points.

LARNED 42, RENO COUNTY 12 (5TH PLACE)

ST. JOHN – The Larned girls raced out to a 13-4 first-quarter lead here Saturday afternoon and went on to dominate the Reno County Sabres 42-12.

Reno County scored one point in the pivotal second quarter as Larned’s full-court pressure defense caused 22 first-half turnovers. The score at halftime was 23-5. Larned’s Karley Lemuz dominated first-half play as she had 11 first-quarter points and 14 by halftime.

Larned's Karley Lemuz scored 14 first-half points. McKenzie Reinert posted seven and Akielah Collins added six. Nine Larned players dented the scoreboard. The Indians were 15 of 58 from the field and 10 of 16 from the charity stripe. Larned (2-10) plays Feb. 1 at Lyons for a Central Kansas League game.

“I'm happy with the win. We haven’t had a lot of those this year so, any win is good," said Larned coach Jerrod Smith. "We focused on attacking in the paint, getting the ball inside. We did a good job in the first half. We played a lot of girls and they all played well.”

The Reno County Sabres made 1 of 9 first-half shots and finished 3 of 15 for 20%. The pressing Larned defense caused 33 Sabre turnovers and was the dominant feature in the game.

Addy Walton had 5 points to lead Reno County. Anne Schawe added 3.
