Oiler girls keep rolling at St. John

CENTRAL PLAINS GIRLS 54, LARNED 26 – The Central Plains girls used a 23-0 third quarter to roll past Larned 54-26 at the St.John Tournament. Central Plains shot a hot 20 of 36 from the field and 10 of 20 from the point area. Brynna Hammeke scored 25 points and Marilyn Soeken added 16.

Larned (3-8) made 9 of 37 shots, 3 of 18 in the second half. Jadyn Pinkston scored 11 points and Akielah Collins added five.

The Oilers stretched a 7-5 lead to 27-17 at halftime. behind 17 first-half points by Hammeke. Soeken added the other 10 points.

Larned made 3 of 18 second half shots. The interior defense of Central Plains refused to let Larned get the ball inside. Larned attempted 19 three point shots.

“It’s frustrating because our defense is good enough to win these games, but we are too impatient on offense,” said Larned coach Jerrod Smith "We took 19 3-point shots and that’s too many when you’re not making them. We lost Hammeke. She’s a terrific player.”

MINNEAPOLIS GIRLS 54, MACKSVILLE 40 – Macksville’s Kamby Adams scored 13 points with eight rebounds and Mayce Russell contributed 10 points, six steals and three assists at the St. John Tournament.

Braedee Weatherman led the Lions with 16 points.

WICHITA SUNRISE 53, MACKSVILLE 47 – Sunrise's Sandra Hracka scored 24 points and the winners converted six 3-pointers to hold off pesky Macksville.

Mustang Mayce Russell scored 16 points. Kambry Adams contributed seven points, three assists and 11 rebounds.

ST. JOHN GIRLS 54, LARNED 32 –The Lady Tigers of St. John proved rude hosts as they roughed up the Larned Lady Indians 54-32 in the St. John Mid-Winter Classic.

Heidi Fisher led the scoring parade with 20 points but Lydia Reed posted 12, Mia Meyer 8 and Reagan Bonner 7. St. John made 19 of 35 field goal attempts for 54% and converted 15 of 25 free throws. 

St. John grabbed a 16-8 first quarter lead and were never challenged as their swarming defense forced Larned into numerous bad shots, resulting in a poor shooting night. Larned converted 5 of 25 first-half shots.

Fisher was either scoring or threading pin-point passes for easy baskets for her teammates. The result was a hot-shooting night for the Lady Tigers and trips to the free throw line.

Larned's Akielah Collins scored eight points. Abby Holt and Makenzie Reinert each added six points. Larned made 12 of 56 shots for 21% and only 6 of 15 from the free throw line. 

Larned will meet Macksville in Saturday's 11:30 a.m. fifth-place game.

WICHITA INDEPENDENT 67, NICKERSON 52 – Alex King scored 16 points to lead the Nickerson Panthers in scoring for the third consecutive game at the St. John Mid-Winter Basketball Classic. King converted five field goals and five free throws. The Panthers (1-10) play Central Plains Thursday at 7:30 and play Saturday in the final round.

Christian Dean led Wichita Independent with 19 points.

LARNED 58, ST. JOHN 45 – With three players scoring in double figures, the Larned Indians cruised past St. John 58-45 in the St. John Mid-Winter Classic.

Larned (4-7) wss led by the ball-hawking and scoring of guard Brady Hope with 19 points. Easton Fitzpatrick scored 12 and Cade Colglazier 11. Ty Smith came off the bench to provide the Indians with a strong rebounding and  defense. The Indians made 23 of 40 field goals for 57%.

“Our defense was as good as we’ve played," said Larned coach Luke Steinlage. "We had a few lapses, but I liked our effort. Our defense got some turnovers and that resulted in some easy baskets."

Scrappy St. John made 15 of 35 field goal attempts for 42%. The Tigers were led in scoring by Quade Smith with 14. Marco Ibarra scored 11 while Alan Valenzuela added six points.

Larned jumped out to a 16-9 first quarter lead and managed a 7 to 14 point lead for most of the game. A strong rebounding effort by Larned produced a number of easy baskets for the Indians.

Behind Brady Hope’s 10 first-half points, the Indians grabbed a 29-20 halftime advantage that they extended to 43-32 entering the fourth quarter. St. John hit two consecutive 3-pointers in the third quarter to narrow the gap to 7 but the Indians recovered and pulled away over the final minutes.

Fourth-seeded Larned will meet top-seeded  Macksville in a semifinal game on Friday afternoon at 4:30 pm.
