Oilers projected to shift to 1A

TOPEKA — Defending 2A state basketball champion Central Plains High School is projected to shift to Class 1A when the newest classifications for sports activities are announced next week by the Kansas State High School Activities Association. 

Official enrollment counts in Kansas high schools were taken Thursday. 

Central Plains captured the 2A boys and girls basketball titles at Manhattan with 26-0 records last year.

Under the revamped system, the largest 36 schools will be placed in 6A. The next 36 largest schools will be in 5A and the next 36 schools will be in 4A. 

Class 3A and 2A will be composed of 64 schools. The remaining schools will be placed in 1A, leaving Kansas with six classes, compared to eight in basketball and football in recent years.

Based on enrollment figures and football numbers from last year:

PROJECTED NEW 6A SCHOOLS — Liberal, Wichita Heights, Mill Valley, KC Wyandotte 

PROJECTED NEW 5A SCHOOLS — Hays High, KC Sumner, Olathe West, Arkansas City  

PROJECTED NEW 3A SCHOOL — Pratt

PROJECTED NEW 1A SCHOOL — Central Plains
