LIBERAL – Securing a 3-0 lead didn’t mean much in Friday’s Western Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader.

Great Bend rallied from a 3-0 deficit for an 8-3 first-game victory. Two-time defending WAC champion Liberal turned a 3-0 deficit into an 8-5 victory in the nightcap.

Great Bend (4-4, 1-1 WAC) plays at Hays Tuesday in a single game.

GREAT BEND 8, LIBERAL 3 (G1) – Jesus Bujanda delivered a three-run sixth-inning homer to swing the momentum. The Panthers scored eight consecutive runs after trailing 3-0.

Liberal led 2-0, but shortstop Alex Schremmer prevented a bigger rally by throwing out Eli McCarter at home. Syris Dunlap scored on Fransisco Terrazas’ first-inning double. Pinch runner Shay Kerr scored on a groundout. Braxton Hyde’s fourth-inning homer made it 3-0 off starter Joey Soupiset.

Calan Haberman’s groundout scored Soupiset after a fifth-inning double.

Jesus Bujanda blasted a three-homer to centerfield after Alex Schremmer and Eddie Bujanda reached on infield singles for a 4-3 lead.

The Panthers scored four seventh-inning runs. Schremmer’s windblown single scored Riley Smith. Eddie Bujanda doubled home Townshend Kurth and Schremmer. Jesus Bujanda scored on an error for an 8-3 lead.

LIBERAL 8, GREAT BEND 5 (G2) – Great Bend scored three second-inning runs off starter Braxton Hyde. Soupiset singled home Jesus Bujanda. Smith’s single scored Soupiset. Haberman’s double scored Colin Hall, but Smith was thrown out by second baseman Kyle Purdy.

Liberal’s Javier Bojorquez doubled home Dylan Thompson in the second inning.

Townshend Kurth drilled a bases-loaded homer for a 4-1 lead in the third. Syris Dunlap tripled home Eli McCarter and Rodney Pando. Dunlap scored on Terrazas’ single. Bojorquez singled home Terrazas for a 5-4 lead after three innings.

McCarter’s double scored Pando and Dunlap’s sacrifice fly scored McCarter for an 7-4 lead after four frames. Eddie Bujanda’s double scored Kurth to for a 7-5 lead after five innings.

McCarter’s tripled scored Shay Kerr for an 8-5 lead after six innings.
