Panther basketball splits with Garden City

 GARDEN CITY — The Great Bend High School girls basketball team survived with a late 58-55 rally over Garden City.
The Great Bend were not so forunate, losing 47-38 in the Western Atheltic Conference opener for both teams.
Great Bend’s girls outsored Garden City 8-4 in the final 3:06 to steak a 58-55 road win. Great Bend (4-2, 1-0) also beat the Lady Buffs 45-37 in the third-place game of the Hays City Shootout in December.
Great Bend’s Regan Unruh led the way with 23 points, including 11-of-12 free throws. Lauren Welsch added 18, including 3-of-4 treys in the second half. The Panthers drilled 24-of-36 free throws while the Buffs made 9 of 19.
Joslyn Munoz scored to hand Garden City a 51-50 lead, but Great Bend responded with seven free throws in 1:50 to go up 57-51.
Garden City’s Breece Dreiling scored and Great Bend’s Kate Warren made a free throw with 22 seconds left for a 58-53 lead. Tiffany Butler scored a basket for a 58-55 margin with nine seconds left. After two missed free throws, Breece Dreiling missed Garden City’s final attempt to tie, hitting the front of the rim.
Abbie Dart scored 13 points, and hit a trio of 3-pointers. Joslyn Munoz scored 12 points. Jessica Carrillo scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.  Garden City dropped to 4-5 and 0-2 in league.
GARDEN CITY 47, GREAT BEND 38 — Garden City’s Caleb Tramp scored 21 points and converted 10-of-11 field goals, highlighted by a slam dunk in the first quarter. Miguel Olivas lofted a pass off the backboard for Tramp’s dunk. The Buffs led 26-15 at halftime and stretched the lead to 40-25.
Great Bend’s  Cody Crosby scored 11 points and Shade Wondra chipped in eight points.
Garden City (5-4, 2-0 WAC) has posted two home wins. Great Bend drops to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league.
Garden City led 16-5 after one quarter with a trapping defense that forced several turnovers.  The Panthers converted 14 of 16 free throws, nine-ofnine in the fourth quarter. Garden City converted 22-of-38 shots (58 percent) and the Panthers shot 42 percent on 11-of-26 field goals.
